Creative Writing Residential
Sunday 29th July – Saturday 4th August 2007

The location for the write4kicks Creative Writing Residential 29th July - 4th August 2007 was Stonar School on the Wiltshire/Somerset border. Set in 85 acres of beautiful Wiltshire countryside, Stonar School is an ideal scenic and relaxed setting for a Creative Writing Residential.

The School is made up of a collection of buildings, several of which are historically interesting. There is some evidence that Cottles House, built in 1565, may have been the location of part of a small monastery dating back to Anglo Saxon times. The building known as Fuller House is a remaining part of the original monastic settlement and would have served as the priest’s house. The School dining room and Beaufort classroom block were built inside the old walled garden of the Monastery and Hart House stands on the site of the old cloisters. Stonar School has occupied the site since 1939.

The School can only be approached along a half-kilometre driveway from a country road, and is completely secluded from the neighbouring communities. Security is provided by a member of the School security team each night.

Facilities on the site include a full size Sports Hall, an indoor 25 metre heated swimming pool, an Astroturf, an outdoor running track, squash and tennis courts and a fitness suite. There is also a large lecture theatre with extended seating and a large screen for showing films.

Accommodation is provided in rooms in the original mansion house. There are rooms ranging in size, from those that sleep one person to those that sleep up to five. The dining room is a self-service canteen, where all dishes are prepared fresh in the kitchen each day and are provided by Aramark, the School’s catering company, whose fully qualified chefs can cater for any specific dietary requirements.
