‘Our objective is to nurture creative writing talent in young people by inspiring original composition in a relaxed and positive atmosphere. We strive to enhance understanding of the artistic, professional and therapeutic value of writing and encourage its use as a tool for personal development and self-expression.’
Founded by Cat Jones and Fliss Buckles, write4kicks was set up in response to the growing success of creative writing as a university subject and the frustration that many teachers and their students experience at the limited amount of time devoted to it as part of the English curriculum in schools, especially at KS4. At write4kicks we believe that encouraging young people to write, particularly in collaboration with others and giving them the tools with which to do so to the best of their ability is intellectually and socially enriching.
At write4kicks we promote creative writing amongst young people in the following three ways:
- write4kicks Creative Writing Residentials
- write4kicks One-day Workshops in Schools
- The write4kicks Young Writers’ Forum
write4kicks is committed to making creative writing opportunities for young people as widely available as possible. For this reason we offer a number of bursary places on all our residential courses.

Creative Writing Residentials
We will be running a number of week-long residential courses aimed at 13-17 year-olds with a love and flair for writing. Successful applicants will attend a series of workshops, exploring areas such as: the novel, poetry, screenwriting and journalism. Sessions are led by a team comprised of experienced teachers and published writers. In 2007 they included writer of ‘Skins’ and ‘Shameless’, Jack Thorne and best-selling novelist, Fay Weldon.

Edinburgh Showcase
This summer we will be taking a small group of the UK’s most promising young writers (13-17) to The Edinburgh Festival where they will work with industry professionals to put on a showcase for thegeneral public at a fringe venue. So if you’re a playwright, stand-up comedian, songwriter, novelist, performance poet or screenwriter who has what it takes to make a great show, we look forward to hearing from you.
